Oak Decline
Oak decline results in dieback and mortality of dominant and co-dominant mature oaks. It is most pronounced today in the South, with 9.9 percent of upland hardwood forests reported affected in 1997. Oak decline has been documented to follow gypsy moth defoliation, so there is hope that this problem will become less widespread as the gypsy moth activity is curtailed (see discussion under the heading "Gypsy Moth").
